New York
The Gates
I was here in New York in February 2005 and was lucky enough to see this magnificent sight in Central Park.
Here’s a little info about the gates.
• The idea for the Gates came from Christo and Jeanne-Claude in 1979.
• The gates were unfurled in Central Park on the 12th February 2005 and remained until 27th February 2005.
• On 22nd January 2003, the New York City granted permission to the artists.
• 7,500 gates, 16 feet high (4.87m) with widths from 5 foot 6 inches (1.68m) to 18 feet (5.48m) lined 23 miles (36.8km) of the footpaths within the park
• The fabrics were all saffron in colour.
• The gates employed hundreds of New Yorkers, who assembled, maintained and removed them.
• When the gates were removed all of the material was recycled.
• The gates were financed by the artists themselves and it was free to go and see them.
Whilst I was viewing them, Laura Bush, came to view them, I managed to get right in the middle of the official cars! Take a look at my pictures, no close up zoom or large lens, I was that close.

Lots of people turned out to see them and they were seen all over the world.

It really is “A PEOPLE THING”
