Leuven on the banks of the river Dyle is a University city, I’ve taken holiday group’s to this city and it’s surrounding area on many occasions, but to escort a tour to Leuven at new year and on the eve of the New Millennium was fantastic.
Having travelled to Leuven, we checked into our hotel, the Holiday Inn Garden Court, it’s position right in the centre of town is perfect.
The following day, I took the group on an excursion to Brussels, after a great day exploring the city and all its sights and attractions, we returned to the hotel in time to freshen up before a Gala New Years Eve Dinner.
After dinner everybody headed for the town, the festivities for the millennium were to be held in front of the Town Hall (Stadhuis), a 15c gothic building. As midnight grew nearer, more and more people arrived, until eventually all eyes were on the clock, on the stroke of midnight, the front of the Town Hall was lit up with light, a huge cheer went up and people were dancing in the street, fireworks lit up the sky and the year 2000 has arrived.
