Durham Castle built in 1072, was originally a defensive fortress offering protection from Scotland

Durham is a University City which has grown around the Church and Castle area, parts of the Castle are now used for student housing.

Durham has plenty of attractions and shops for the visitor and some lovely walks along the canal, during the summerthere are even open –air theatre performances.
