Durham

Built on a Hill Durham is a great place to visit at any time of the year. Its two main attractions are Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle.

Construction of Durham Cathedral began in 1093 by Bishop William of Calais and took nearly 200 years to complete. It was the first Cathedral to use ribbed vaulting on a large scale with the stone columns inside having a variety of wonderfully carved patterns.

Durham Castle built in 1072, was originally a defensive fortress offering protection from Scotland.

Durham is a University City which has grown around the Church and Castle area, parts of the Castle are now used for student housing.

Durham has plenty of attractions and shops for the visitor and some lovely walks along the canal, during the summer there are even open –air theatre performances.
