We travel to St Jacobs as I escort a day excursion from Toronto, it’s a fascinating town to visit, set right in the heart of the
Mennonite farming area. The farm land surrounding St Jacobs, are mainly farmed using the traditional farming methods.
As we travel the area, its like "going back in time", you can like it to“Little house on the prairie” where the farmers still use the horses for pulling farm machinery, such as the plough, all the locals know each other and drive horse drawn vehicles as an everyday mode of transport. The Mennonite community doesn’t use the everyday things that are common in most Canadian homes, such as telephones and televisions.
Once a week the town of St Jacobs, hosts the market and the locals sell their wares. Maple syrup seems to be what is on offer on many of the stalls, but other foodstuffs can be purchased, the ham and cheese stalls are always busy, not only selling things to take home but also sandwiches and rolls that can be eaten straight away.
I personally enjoy both the market and farming area tour and find them enjoyable, no matter what time of the year.
