Alice Springs

Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia, is known locally as "Alice", Alice is the largest settlement in Central Australia. When you land at Alice Springs Airport and get off the aircraft the first thing you notice are the flies, everybody is doing the "Aussy wave" to keep the flies from landing on your face.
On my first visit to Alice Springs, just seeing how red the soil was, was amazing. I really was in the "Red Centre" of Australia.
Alice Springs which is connected to the rest of Australia by the Ghan Train Line, this opened in the 20th century, is also one of the most important and historic towns in Australia. The town is modern and has a large shopping centre and great restaurants, Todd Mall is pedestrianised which once a year holds the famous "Henley On Todd" boat race, i was lucky enough to see this race in action in 2004, the "boats", as you can see from my pictures, don't actually go on or anywhere near the River Todd, in fact the race is called off, if the river has any water in it!. One “must do” tour that is enjoyed by all is a visit to the Royal Flying Doctor’s Station, I have taken group’s here, booking is essential, where you can witness at first hand the work of the service, if they are not to busy with emergencies, the friendly people that work there will guide you through what happens from the first emergency call, to the outcome of the call. A small museum is also at the Station that is “self guided” allowing you to spend as much or as little time as you like. O your way out, a welcome cup of tea can be taken in the tea room. Once again i've been lucky enough to visit Alice many times. Historic tourist attractions in Alice are Adelaide House, dating back to the 1920’s, when it was the first purpose built hospital in Alice Springs, Stuart Town Gaol, the oldest surviving building in Alice Springs, built in the early 20th century and now owned by the national trust, Old Courthouse, constructed in 1928, when it was the office of the administrator for the area of Australia, before becoming the Alice Springs Courthouse until 1980, and then finally the home of the National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame. Other things to do in Alice are visiting the Reptile Centre, the Frontier Camel Farm, where there is a small museum and you can also ride a Camel.

It really is “A PEOPLE THING”
